Pui Kiu College's Annual Grade 5 Show

The Grade 5 Show is an annual performance at Pui Kiu College. The first show took the stage in 2010 where the students performed an original script called The Gingerbread Girl.

From then on, the Grade 5 Show was born.

Since The Gingerbread Girl, the annual Grade 5 Show has gone through a gamut of names from Mulan, Mission Possible, Aladdin, It’s Time for Ten!, Timeline!, Better Together!, Dream On! And this year, we have Empathy Unleashed!

The performance consists of a series of stories (usually four different stories) which are written by our Performing Arts teachers. The scripts are written over the summer break and auditions and rehearsals begin immediately when school opens its doors in September.

This year, the Grade 5 Show consisted of three stories – Life-Changing Live, Being One and Live from Hong Kong. All the stories centred on the school’s theme – Empathy. Each story saw the development of their characters learning to be kind, to be empathetic.

In Life-Changing Live, a live-stream podcast featured different scenarios where the characters learnt how to be kind to one another as they went through different events like camping, a soccer match and a classroom scenario.

In the second story, Being One, we were taken back to Viking times where we learnt that forgiveness, being kind and empathy go a long way towards creating a peaceful society on and off shore.

In the last story, Live from Hong Kong, we looked at the different lives of different characters, including household appliances and how we might take people and appliances around us for granted.

Pui Kiu College is very proud of this tradition for many reasons.

Firstly, it provides a platform for our students to showcase talents not always seen in the traditional classroom. These talents include acting, singing, dancing, movement, presentation skills and other skills involved in stage work. Students also learn to work with one another and for one another.

Secondly, it is a wonderful time for the whole school community to come together for a common purpose – that of showcasing the best of our students. For an entire year, students, teachers, parents and the staff of Pui Kiu College work towards one goal. The value of building this kind of community is not taken lightly. It creates a culture of harmony and collaboration.

Last but not least, it’s a reminder that all of our students are stars, and that while some excel inside the classroom, there are many who excel outside of it.
